Day 1 pt.1
Advance Characterization
This hands-on session covers advanced techniques for aesthetic characterization in composite restorations. Participants will learn how to use cross-polarized photography to identify fine details such as halos, translucencies, and cracks, along with digital methods to enhance contrast. The session also focuses on creating and using a silicone index to precisely replicate tooth anatomy, particularly the incisal edge and palatal wall. Step-by-step application of dentin, translucent, and white opaque composites will be demonstrated to build natural effects like incisal halos and white spots. The goal is to equip clinicians with practical tools to achieve highly refined, lifelike restorations.
Diastema
This session explores the Front Wing technique for diastema closure, focusing on minimal intervention and freehand composite modeling to achieve precise, symmetrical results. Key steps include proper etching, thorough bonding, and the use of proximal matrices as intra-operative diagnostic guides. Tissue management, sometimes involving retraction or minor surgery, is also discussed to prevent issues like double profiles and ensure seamless integration with the gingival architecture. The technique emphasizes stability through material selection, allowing predictable outcomes without the need for wax-ups or complex matrices. The approach favors single-shade composites for simplicity and natural blending, with attention to pre-restoration bleaching and long-term aesthetic maintenance to preserve results over time
Day 1 pt.2
Direct Veneers
Direct veneers are approached through a minimally invasive technique that often requires little or no tooth preparation. The procedure is divided into three essential steps: securing the cervical margin, shaping the proximal walls, and completing the buccal surface using selected matrices and composite materials. A detailed anatomical system comprising basic, primary, secondary, and tertiary forms is applied to guide the sculpting process, with specific instruments like discs and burs used for precision finishing. This method emphasizes accuracy, speed, and natural aesthetics, allowing clinicians to achieve a highly integrated, long-lasting result in a single appointment. Special attention is given to morphology and surface texture to ensure harmony with adjacent teeth and optimal clinical performance over time.
Masking a Dark Tooth
Masking a discoloured tooth is a complex aesthetic challenge that requires precision and strategic material use. The technique involves applying a custom-mixed flowable opaquer to neutralize the dark substrate, followed by careful composite layering to restore natural translucency and shade. Real-time adjustments before bonding allow for greater control over the final result. Digital shade tools like the OptiShade can assist with accuracy, though outcomes remain variable. Managing patient expectations is essential, and in some cases, placing two veneers instead of one may provide a more harmonious and predictable solution.
Day 2 pt.1
Project Mock-up
Project mockups play a crucial role in planning minimally invasive treatments, especially for veneers. By creating a preliminary model of the desired outcome, clinicians can gain patient approval and guide precise, conservative preparation before any permanent changes are made. Composite is preferred over acrylic for its ease of modification and faster handling. The approach introduces advanced technique like 3D printed resin model, which enhances the try-in phase and enables visual adjustments such as tooth length without altering the teeth. This method supports enamel preservation while ensuring predictable, patient-approved results, using the mockup as both a diagnostic and provisional tool.
Veneer preparation
Veneer preparation is reimagined through a simplified, modern approach that emphasizes minimal intervention and strategic planning. Rather than following rigid, margin-focused protocols, the emphasis is on targeted reduction where it’s truly needed, mainly at the incisal edge and central facial area, to create sufficient space for the technician while preserving enamel. Guided by mockups and close collaboration with the dental lab, this philosophy of “just enough” preparation supports both aesthetics and long-term durability. Preserving contact points is also a key priority, helping to minimize material removal and maintain natural tooth structure. The discussion addresses key restorative challenges such as bonding, margin accuracy, managing excess material, and achieving a smooth, stain-resistant finish.
Day 2 pt.2
Overlay Preparation and Cementation
This extensive discussion focuses on modern dental restoration techniques, particularly for posterior teeth, emphasising a departure from traditional, metal-era preparations towards more adhesive and conservative approaches. The core philosophy advocates for overlays as a primary solution for partial restorations, especially when two proximal walls are lost, contrasting this with full crowns or direct fillings in specific scenarios. Key aspects include a standardised 2mm cusp shortening during preparation, the importance of horizontal margins for optimal adhesion, and a precise, step-by-step methodology for cleaning caries and preparing the tooth. The teacher also details cementation protocols, highlighting the use of flowable composite materials and a specific technique for excess removal to ensure a clean, well-sealed restoration, stressing that indirect partial restorations should be opportunities, not headaches.
